An old photo I randomly found of Orlando at about 14 ish. We were at penhale army cadet camp with Neil Martin, Dan Riden, cath and Laura Taylor (me). Happy days. (Quality is not great as its a photo of a photo).

I never met Orlando but having seen him on TV in Commando on the Frontline and also his rowing exploits aboard Go Commando I was struck by his zeal for life and his very obvious pride in being a Royal Marine. He had a cheery manner with recruits at Lympstone and seemed to always be smiling about something or other. I guess he personified one of the elements of the Commando Spirit, that being cheerfulness. I’m an ex Para with an interest in ocean rowing and its only when I was trying to obtain a DVD of the Go Commando rowing programme that I learnt of his passing. Very sad. RIP Orlando. I have no doubts that you’re sorely missed by many people.

I still remember the day the young 2nd lieutenant joined Lima coy, telling us he wasn’t like the other officers where myself and a couple other lads were thinking here we go a gain another young officer to mess us around, a week later we were high abseiling off the viaduct using his Toyota surf as the anchor point and trying t= o out do each other and having a right laugh. Fast forward a few years bumping into him in Sri Lanka after he came off his moped and trashing it ha ha what a bloke a true legend.

Good afternoon all. I’m a trustee of the Orlando Rogers Foundation. I know we are coming up to the anniversary when we lost the blue-print of a real Man. A lot of us are ex-servicemen and women or are currently serving. I am sure we all agree that he touched us all with his joie de vivre and words of advice or friendly guidance. Above all, he made a huge difference to the lives of many. He always went beyond measure to achieve and excel and was constantly aware of the needs of others and made sure others became aware of such needs too. If you work offshore, or in security, or in the services, or a large company or whatever you do, I would ask that on his second anniversary we look at trying to gain as much momentum in fundraising as we can. Print out flyers o r put up a small poster; let all who know you and your friends know of the efforts we are making to try and gain momentum in raising funds for this truly inspirational charity. 20 In my buddy Phil Walker’s words: ” I am in Iraq just now and we will place the poster up in the mess. We have loads of ex-service guys here. I am happy to help, he was one of us. Please help us all make a difference. On the 15th of May we lost more than a friend, we lost a perfect blue-print of what any human should be . Orlando Rogers RIP my friend you are a legend. Thanks all, please make a diffrence

Hope you are well, Toni xxx

Hi Everyone, I was an instructor at Lympstone when young Orlando joined Her Majesty’s finest Royal Marines. He was a great student and took the training in his stride, little did I know I’d be working for him some years later when he and Dave P started Solace Global Maritime. It was a great loss to us all when the accident occurred and he will be dearly missed. During the time of the accident I was writing a guidebook on maritime anti-piracy and thought it fit that the book should be in memory of Orlando, my sister and two other great friends who passed away during the time of writing. RIP Orlando; you are a man amongst men!

The lord saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put his arms around you and He whispered come to me. With tearful eyes I watched you and saw you pass away. Although I loved you dearly, I couldn’t make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke my heart to prove to me,… he only takes the best. Put this on your status if there is someone in heaven you miss everyday

It has been a long time since I last saw Orlando but I must say that even at the young age of 13/14 orlando stood out from the crowd as being special I will always remember the fun times we had when I worked in magazone at la bowl. Orlando & quot;joker” Rodgers is one of the few people who has truly inspired me to push myself to do better, I have never known anyone who could even at a young age be respected as an equal by 20+ year olds. We wasted far to many Sunday’s shooting at each other with laser guns and got one or two nasty bumps along the way. It is a shame I never managed to catch up with him again although I often found myself checking to see if he was on any web sites. Seeing Orlandos photo on the front page of the local paper will always stand as one of the worst memory’s of my life, I will miss him always.

Dear all – I still can’t believe what has happened. It hurts beyond anything I could ever explain. Every minute of every day I miss Orlando and truly I am heartbroken. You probably don’t want to hear that though. Still, I’m determined to keep going – one step at a time – just one more step. I have received 2 draft logos for the trust and would welcome some more logo ideas. I’ve done a draft website and am continuing with the admin for the Trust – but it is open up and running so please feel free to contribute. Please consider doing anything (well not quite quite anything!) to raise funds for the Trust – Orlando gave so much to everyone he met in his short life it would be honourable to do something now in his name and to help others. Please feel free to say hello – Orlando’s friends will always be welcome at our house.

On a beautifully still night on the waters edge at Poole we lit up floating lanterns with all the lovely messages Orlando’s friends and family wrote to him at his funeral.

I went again to visit my beloved son at his resting spot today. I still can’t believe it. Surreal. May I ask a favour? There are some wonderful photos on the tribute page of Orlando. Would people be willing to send me higher resolution pictures – i.e. the original files not the kind of downsized ones one has to use on facebook? Then I could print out high quality enlargements. Discs to my address – if you message me I’ll provide it. We will update you on Orlando Rogers Charitable Trust soon so do hope you’ll all help to fund raise and keep his spirit going in every which way possible. Any more stories? It’s such a big help when you share your memories with me.

Devastated!….Where do i start? Worked with Orlando out in Afghan and it didn’t take long for the banter to start between us. My favourite story about him was when we’d been out on the ground for about 3 weeks and he woke me up at 3 in the morning to get the Military laptop off me to write his Daily Report for HQ.
Sunday, July 3, 2011 Emma Price
I was threaders as Orlando found it impossible to write these Reports when i was awake. Anyway i drifted back off to sleep and he woke me an hour later to get me to send it. I knew sending it at this time would take ages trying to fix a satellite. So as i was about to close the laptop down and send the Report in the morning i noticed a new folder on the desktop, titled ‘Honours and Awards List” i knew certain people were being mentioned for awards so thought as i was already awake i would be nosy and find out who the hierarchy had in mind. I double clicked the folder and it opened into 2 more folders, L/Cpl Howie (the lad i shared a tent with) and Cpl Price (ME). My eyes lit up the desert at 4 in the morning and my heart skipped a beat.
Sunday, July 3, 2011 Emma Price
Visions of the Queen presenting me the Victoria Cross for Valour, humour in the face of the enemy etc etc. As i double clicked the folder it opened up into a= n A4 size cartoon Penis the length of the screen, with a speech bubble coming from the bulbous tip saying ”In your dreams Pricey! Send that Report and get back on the Radio!!!Never before have i been had to that extent. It was pitch black and all i could hear was a muffled giggle from inside someone’s sleeping bag somewhere in the darkness of the desert. Needless to say the whole tour centered around me getting him back and so on.My tour was made better by Orlando being there and the laughter we shared. After leaving the Marines i started working for him and Dave and still do. Me and my family owe so much to Orlando and we will never forget what has done for us. To the world you may be someone, but to someone you may be the world!I miss you mate, Pricey

Orlando showed me how to make a bomb from weed killer and set it off on the patio in his garden. Later I tried to make one myself in the back garden of my rented house at uni while having a bbq and party. I’d had a few beers so wasn’t thinking about what I was doing, so anyway the bomb went off, everyone was impressed…. apart from my landlord when a week later all the grass on the lawn was dead!! Cheers Orlando

Didn’t know you long ‘Roya’l… a few days in Egypt, an edgy transit and a BIG night in Salalah, but long enough to like you and become friends….

Orly, you were one person that I thought would never be taken away from me as many people have said this world will not be the same without you- my thoughts are with your family & friends. Our last day together, not knowing it was your last weekend… you were so happy. You had no regrets, completely content with life. In fact two things you were worried about were; 1= ) how bad your hangover was 2) when you could buy bigger & faster bikes/boats! On Saturday 14th May one thing that was said to us by a good friend was live life while you can & enjoy every minute, there will be plenty of time to rest when we are in a box. Well you did live life to the full & I’m not going to say goodbye, I=’m going to say thank you for all the happy memories & adventures & thank you for always being there for me you are one in a million. Hope you are enjoying your new adventure Orly; I will try & make you proud & cannot wait to see you on the other side. Rest in peace, love you & miss you xx

This is the memorial cairn built by Chris Terrill and Paul Mattin, who held a ceremony at the same time as Orlando’s funeral at Patrol Base Wahid, Helmand in Afghanistan. They left ration pack sweets, tobasco sauce (an Orlando favoutite!) and toasted Orlando with single malt. The cairn is there as a memorial for anybody who wishes to pay their respects. How beautiful that Orlando is being remembered in so many places and extraordinary ways! I know he would have approved! Thankyou Chris and Paul!

We held a ceremony today for Orlando today at a patrol base in Helmand. We (Paul Mattin and I) built a simple cairn under the forward defensive rampart of the base in which we placed some goodies (nutty and ration pack duff) and toasted Orlando with a sip each of single malt from a silver hip flask. We naturally poured some over the cairn for Orlando. I hear from my wife that his funeral back home was hoofing in the very best sense of the word. The young lion had a great send off.

To the living, I am gone To the sorrowful, I will never return To the angry, I was cheated But to the happy, I am at peace And to the faithful, I have never left I cannot speak, but I can listen I cannot be seen, but I can be heard So as you stand upon the shore Gazing at the beautiful sea, remember me As you look in awe at a mighty forest And in its grand majesty, remember me Remember me in your hearts, In your thoughts, and the memories of the Times we loved, the times we cried, the battle we fought and the times we laughed For if you always think of me, I will never have gone. xxxxxxx

I can’t be there tomorrow but I will be thinking of Orlando and his friends and family. I would like to donate to the trust, so will keep an eye out for details of how to donate. I have some funny memories of Orlando – from school days – him leading the way across a field back to our campsite during a summer road trip to Polzeath as he was the only one to bring a torch (obviously) – and more recent times – seeing him and his full on beard at Christmas, which he had apparently grown to make him look older and gain kudos with all the shipping company bigwigs he was dealing with in running his new company – brilliant. There aren’t enough words to do him justice. RIP xxx

Tomorrow is the day to say goodbye to Orlando. I am in Afghanistan with Paul Mattin and we are currently out on a Helmand patrol base but tomorrow at exactly the same time as the funeral we will build a cairn out of rocks in the Afghan desert and place in it a ration pack of treacle pudding – something I know Orlando would appreciate. We hope everyone has a fulfilling day of remembrance and celebration of a short life extremely well lived.

Another update: Julia wants to enforce that people should do whatever they feel most comfortable with. There will be opportunity at the wake (and by post) to donate to The Orlando Rogers Charitable Trust. However, if you prefer, flower tributes are also welcome. Similarly, do not feel obliged to bring a photograph along. However if you have a photo and would like to give this to Orlandos family as something to keep and remember him with, please do. It will just be great to see those who are able to attend and celebrate Orlando’s life as he would have wanted.
Monday, May 30, 2011 James Irvine
Hi everyone, Orlando’s funeral will start at 11am at Milton Abbey, Dorset. There will be a wake afterwards at the Salterns Harbourside Hotel, Salterns Marina, 38 Salterns Way, Poole. Be aware it is a 21 mile drive from the Abbey to the wake (approx. 40mins). It was Orlando’s wish for people to bring a photograph of him along to his funeral, with a memory or story of him written on the back. These can be collected at the wake, and will provide a fitting memory of him for his family to keep. Jade has already told you that it is not required to wear black, and a bit of colour better reflects Orlando’s outlook on life.

I went to primary school with Orlando, i’m really saddened to hear about his passing:-( he was a a very energetic character and a great athlete even back then. i have= great respect and admiration for all of his hard work to make our country a better place. My thoughts are with all of his family and friends x
Friday, May 27, 2011 Jade Rogers
Update on Orlando’s funeral. Just to make sure everyone knows that all friends of Orlando are welcome, it is an open event. Dress please wear what you are comfortable with, but to reflect Orlando’s outlook on life we would like to emphasise that you are not obliged to wear black, indeed we would prefer to keep the event a bit more colourful! Tributes The Orlando Rogers Charitable Trust helping exceptional people achieve exceptional things. We are in the process of setting up a trust in Orlando’s name, with the aim of raising funds to further causes which were close to his heart. Therefore, donations are suggested as an alternative to floral tributes. Details of the trust will be publicisised in the coming days and at his funeral and celebration afterwards. We look forward to meeting you!

Thankyou to all Orlando’s wonderful friends who have sent best wishes to his family. Everyone’s kindness has been a great help and is really appreciated. My sympathy and condolences also to all his friends – his loss is being felt by many. Thankyou x

The first time I met Orly, I was out with my sister Vicky in the Venue (I was 16!oops). Me and Orly had a mini dance off at the edge of the dance floor, nothing was said, it was hilarious, I remember thinking on Monday when I was in school how hilarious my night had been having a dance off with some random person! Then I was waiting for a coach at school and who did I see across the other side of the coach station coming from the Boys grammar school? Yes it was Orly, he looked at me with recognition as I did with him and we were both in hysterics! (Although I was also slightly mortified!). After that we were fellow psychology A level students together and had some brilliant times, he was the only person I knew who could get away with the banter at the teachers, they loved him and so did everyone! He was hilarious, cheeky and brilliant! RIP Orlando, you will be missed by so many people. Much love xxxxxxxxxxx

Only Orlando would have me zip-lining through the jungle 1000s of feet high in Laos. Only Orlando would have me down the red run on day 1 of my first ever ski-ing experience. And only HE would jump off a moving train (calling me to follow) in the middle of nowhere in Thailand, having realised we’d missed our stop! Never before have I met someone who inspired me so much to live each day for the moment. The world will be a much duller place without you. RIP XXXXXXXX

What can I say mate, the one and only Orlando Rogers ! You will be sorely missed. The ACF, the 110 stuck up at Breacon, route 66 radios, countless tales of the marines, the Orangutan, “You can arrest me, but you CANT catch me” “its ok, were marines, we’re on manoeuvres ” and so many more memories. My husband had Orlando as his troop commander (Scott Fairey). He spoke so highly of him even though he was a lot younger, commented on how he was ahead of his years by miles. My husband and many of his friends who knew Orlando are devastated by the news, someone like that can never be replaced but I know he will live on in their memory (and many, many, MANY dits). Everyone who speaks of orlando has a undisputed opinion that he was a fantastic bloke, full of life, true friend, all that knew him now feel privileged that they had the chance to of shared his life and Now his memories. a true legend. i can remember seeing him out in t= own one night and finding him in the corner of the dance floor with a drink in one hand and griping onto the banister with the other, barely able to stand and looking like he was in agony. i asked what he had done and he replyed that he had surgery on his knee that day but couldnt be bothered to sit around in the evening so thought he may as well go out and get pissed and party instead! he inspired me to join the military and at the end of the year in joining the RAF as a paramedic- biggest inspiration I have ever had to go and make something of your life, life is too short to stand still. he will never be forgotten and will remain in our hearts forever.

I first worked with Orlando about 15 months ago in Oman and then Djibouti. He had an instant likeability about him and we have been mates ever since. He had me in stitches one night as this elderly gay guy was trying his best to pull Orlando, However, the nice guy that Orlando was, spent about 15 minutes trying to wriggle out of it without upsetting the gay guys feelings! True gent! For someone so young, he had an special auro about him which commanded respect. He crammed so much into his life and achieved so much, a winner! One truly great and inspirational bloke who i will never forget. Mate, it was a pleasure knowing you.

I served with Orlando in Afghan on Herrick 9. He was OC MSG for CRF 42 CDO. I was a forward air controller attached to his troop for certain Ops. On one particular Op we were operating out of the vehicles down south. Every evening we would extract from the green zone and head out into the desert to harbour up for the night. Now it was common knowledge after the first few Ops that the sergeant major had a bottle of uber strong hot sauce. Orlando had also at this stage been given the name “OC MRE” (US rations) for the shear quantity of scran he ate!! He really did put it away! On one of these desert harbours we had received an air drop containing fresh rations (cans of shift drink chocolate etc) also in this air drop were some donuts! A favourite of Orlando. We had all tried the hot sauce and other lads would not go near the stuff as they had seen what had happened to others! Sooo in order to get OC MRE to scran some of the delicious sauce we laced the last donut with it and called him over. To his delight we handed him the donut explaining we had all had one and this was the last one which he could have. As you can imagine he got a shock ! Orlando was an amazing bloke with such talents and it was an honour to work a long side him in Afghanistan and for Solace. By the way he still ate all the donut! Strong! RIP Orlando.

I think it’s fair to say Orlando left a mark of inspiration on all of us who were lucky enough to have met him! We shall certainly not meet another character like him, truly unique and a little bit crazy one might add. I’m sure he will watch over and have a great laugh at our expense as we endeavor to achieve a mere fraction of what he did at such a young age. I hope we can do you proud Orlando by honoring you spirited, energetic and brave approach to life. RIP Rogers, see you on the other side, so stand by for the turnip lady 😉 .xx

In what’s classed as their home event of the Zapcat Season the three teams from the Royal Marine Commandos had a fantastic weekend with each of the teams taking a place on the podium over the course of the weekend. Battling it out with 31 other teams at the Surf Racing home of Zapcat Racing, Watergate Bay in Newquay. Richie Lake and Steve Pidsley had a dominating weekend in Go Commando 1 taking the silver podium place in Saturdays final after showing that the surf conditions were suited to them and their racing style. They fought a tight race with Championship leaders Pegasus Vortex Racing and Strong Language in the final to secure the silver spot. Go Commando 1 are sitting in 12th Position in the National Championship but with only 180 points separating the top 12 places in the championship everything is still to play for…..
